Trafficking Children Must Be Treated as a Serious Felony

Measure to Charge Human Traffickers of Minors Passed Committee after Public Outcry

Today, the Assembly Public Safety Committee reversed its previous vote to stop Senate Bill 14 (Grove), a measure to treat human trafficking of children ages 0-17 as a serious crime, and now approved the bill by a vote of 6-0 after public outcry. Assemblyman Vince Fong issued the following statement:

“Human trafficking of minors is a heinous crime – a crime against humanity that robs children of their full potential.

“No one can deny the horrors of human trafficking. The legislature has fast tracked legislation on a number of issues, and it is frustrating and perplexing that the ruling party in Sacramento would not provide the same sense of urgency to protect vulnerable children and hold human traffickers accountable.

“Republicans and all elected officials must continue to advocate for victims who cannot protect themselves.”
