Governor’s Energy Penalty Proposal Empowers Government to Increase Energy Costs – Does Nothing to Lower Gas Price

The Assembly today passed SBX1-2, the Governor’s proposal to create a new layer of bureaucracy that is empowered to control the gas price and impose taxes. Vice Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee – Assemblyman Vince Fong (R-Central Valley) – issued the following statement:

“California families are demanding affordable gas prices, not more government and bureaucracy.

“SBX1-2 does nothing to lower the price of gas. In fact, it may do the opposite and increase prices by exacerbating existing supply problems. The result of this shortsighted legislation will be energy market disruptions, higher costs and energy shortages.

“With little public input, the Governor jammed his proposal that demonizes domestic energy production in our state – a policy that will only harm hard-working Californians. By creating a hostile business climate, the Governor is putting Californians out of work and will make California more dependent on foreign sources of oil and natural gas.

“The Governor should approve the thousands of permits for more domestic production that are sitting on his desk if he is serious about lowering gas prices and safeguarding the environment.”
